Youth Conservation Corps

The Ozaukee County Planning and Parks Department uses the help of various youth conservation corps to complete projects around the county. Groups such as WiscCorps, Americorps, Milwaukee Community Service Corps, NCCC and Great Lakes Civilian Conservation Corps partner with the Planning and Parks Department to obtain valuable job training skills such as native plant identification skills, scientific monitoring skills, construction skills and outdoor restoration experience. 
Examples of Youth Conservation Corps Projects
  • County parks and open space areas
    • Removal of invasive vegetation and brush using chainsaws, weed trimmers, brush cutters, and hand tools
    • Trail construction, maintenance, and management
    • Tree planting
    • General park and building maintenance
    • Collection of recreational trail and park useage and survey data
    • Assistance with special construction projects
    • Install signage
    • Assist with taking GPS information at County Parks and Trails
    • Assist with tree inventories to identify and document Emerald Ash Borer
    • Invasive vegetation surveys
    • Natural areas management tasks
    • Native prairie seeding
    • Fence installation
    • Wildlife monitoring surveys
  • Fish Passage Program
    • Removal of non-structural fish passage impediments, including logjams, debris deposits and invasive vegetation
    • Completion of restoration activities at various project sites, including installation of erosion controls, native seeding and planting, etc.
    • Assistance with fisheries monitoring surveys
